Cattle Manager

Candidate Description:

This Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT candidate grew up on small family diversified row crop, livestock operation in northeast Nebraska with 300 acres of corn, soybeans and forage crops that were mostly fed back to the 1,000 head of cattle and 1,300 hogs the operation fed annually. Throughout high school he also worked weekends at a local feedlot. Upon graduation from high school he attended the University of Nebraska - Lincoln where he initially achieved a Bachelors degree in Animal Science and finally a Master of Science degree in Animal Science specializing in Ruminant Nutrition. During his graduate school work, he wanted to obtain a well-rounded experience and thus did his main research project in partnership with the Meat Science Department. He then participated in the UNL Feedlot Management Program during the summer of 2014 at a feedlot in southwest Nebraska, not for lack of experience, but to gain respect of the crew that he would soon be managing as the Yard Assistant Manager. He believes you can't manage what you don't know, and you can't know the unique aspects of every operation unless you spend some time working within it. While at the feedyard he was in charge of overseeing and delegating the daily activities including feeding, animal health, and facility maintenance at the 22,000 head yard that employed up to 20 employees. Then in February 2016 he had the opportunity to move closer to home and advance in larger role as the Feedlot Manager at another 20,000 head feedlot that also farmed 4,500 acres and employed up to 25 employees. As manager he was responsible for prioritizing and delegating daily activities such as feeding, animal health, and facility maintenance. He was also responsible for generating cattle breakevens, projecting cattle market dates, creating and implementing ration schedules and implant and beta - agonist programs on a pen by pen basis. During his time there he also took on the responsibilities of managing the farming operation and construction of the new state of the art feed batching system was completed. Since then he has been working for a farm as a design consultant for their proposed 20,000 head feedlot; rendering drawings, working with contractors, and generating construction and annual operating budgets for the entire facility from office/cafeteria, animal handling area, feed milling, batching, and storage, and pen design. He has also been asked by software company to be a consultant to their programmers for their rewrite of their livestock software system. He would be interested in positions such as Cattle Manager, Feed Mill Manager, Assistant Manager, and General Manager positions.
