Job Title: Ranch Assistant
Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a qualified Ranch Assistant / Owner’s Right-Hand Man for a progressive Nebraska Sandhills ranch producer. This is an excellent opportunity for a dependable, self-motivated individual to take responsibility for a separate ranch unit and operate with a high level of independence.
Operation Overview
- ~900 head cow/calf operation
- ~1,000 acres of hay production
- Employee will oversee a separate unit of approximately 250–400 cows
- Round bale hay operation utilizing modern equipment
- Ranch utilizes horses and ATVs for daily work
Position Overview
This individual will serve as the owner’s right-hand man, working at a separate ranch location and managing day-to-day operations with minimal supervision. The employer is looking for someone who is a self-starter, dependable, and capable of making sound decisions independently. This is a hands-on role requiring someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities and communicates effectively with ownership. Management and caretaking of the house, yard, builds and equipment is required.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage daily care of 300–400 cows, including calving, feeding, overall herd health and doctoring
- Assist with and manage backgrounding cattle as needed
- Handle all aspects of fencing
- Oversee hay production, including baling and feeding
- Operate equipment (tractors, balers, loaders, etc.)
- Perform routine maintenance and general repairs
- Maintain water systems and general ranch infrastructure
- Work cattle horseback when needed (ability to bring horses is a plus)
- Maintain basic records and communicate regularly with ownership
Qualifications
- Strong cow/calf ranch background required
- Experience with:
- Calving, feeding, and cattle health
- Fencing (including electric fence)
- Hay production
- Backgrounding experience preferred
- Good mechanical ability for routine maintenance and repairs
- Strong decision-making, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities without supervision
- Team-oriented with a strong work ethic

Compensation will be structured based on experience and overall fit, with the opportunity to build additional value through running cows. If a spouse has interest in assisting with ranch operations, there may be opportunities for involvement and additional compensation depending on the situation.
