B.S. Animal and Veterinary Science (Dairy Production).
Dennis graduated with from a University with a BS in Dairy Science. He began his career as a herdsman on a 2500 cow dairy and was primarily in charge of treating the hospital and fresh cows. He also was called on to help with calving difficulties as needed. Dennis then accepted a new position on a pasture based dairy that was very different from any of his previous experiences. He was responsible for managing a milking herd of about 500 cows that grew to just about 1000 during the 4.5 years that he worked there. He supervised the milk parlor team, feeder, calf feeders, and other animal team members and was in charge of both hands on work and had an administrative role as well. Dennis maintained DHI records, EZ feed, payroll and recruiting. He is currently working with a high genomic herd of 1000 milking cows. His current responsibility is to manage Herd Health. This includes maternity, hospital, and calf care. He is responsible for staffing each of these departments and provides protocols and training to department leads and staff. His team interfaces heavily with the farm’s in house diagnostics laboratory. The health care approach is more similar to a clinic in its diagnostic approach and case management. Dennis is searching for a management position on a large dairy operation located in the western half of the US.
